Wiping her eyes on the back of her hand, Wren came to a stop at the foot of a staircase. Angrily, she sat on it, unable to know what to do with herself. Her sixteenth birthday. Kiran fighting with her. He'd started it, but she'd blown it out of proportion, not thinking before she thought, all that.
She felt bad, but she was stubborn and not going to admit it. Which explained why she was sitting dejectedly on the stairs in the first place. She didn't want to go back to the Common Room, but she had no where else to go at that moment.
Damn her and her stubborn pride. And her jumping to conclusions. And inability to think before she spoke. Again, the Centaurs' warnings echoed in her head.
Her arm was beginning to throb now, and she looked at it. Bruises were beginning to form thanks to the combination of Kiran's grip on her arm and her strength to pull away. Her pale skin didn't help much, either.
She was a mess.
Happy birthday to me.

Wren. Wren. The woman of the moment. Kiran was, at the moment, aggravated. He and Wren had some sort of row, which(at least to himself) was not of his his fault. He hadn't intentionally put Wren aside. She took it in some weirdly proportioned way that Kiran couldn't have forseen. How did girls manage to think on that spectrum?
So, here was Kiran, giving Wren chase out of the common room. He was on a mission. He was going to Wren what he meant by his statements, not as she took it. Not to mention, to keep track of her. Wren seemed to be constantly close to an emotional edge these days and Kiran knew why. A couple weeks ago marked the anniversary of her parents' murders. Ironically, the anniversary of the Belleclairs adopting Wren as a surrogate daughter.
What else? This anniversary, Kiran was almost killed by a Death Eater himself, and the constant pain reminder to the ribs told him it would be at least 4 more days before he was fit enough to hold Quidditch practice again. It also accounted for losing Wren in front of him. Kiran settled for a walk, eyes peering around for the girl. Wren was so devasted by the attack that he wouldn't be half surprised if she was dreadful of Christmas in the upcoming year.
And there was Wren, sitting on the base of the staircase. Kiran walked over and sat by her side.
"You're having quite some day, Wren," he said, hand on her back, trying to be as pleasant as possible. "I'm sorry for choosing my words without tact. You know I wouldn't want to ever hurt you. You've been on edge lately... care to vent, at all?"

Wren shook her head as he sat next to her, but didn't pull away or try to leave.
"I'm fine," she told him. "I swear, I am." It was half a lie. Did didn't really realize she wasn't doing that well herself, and that there was an underlying issue to why she took everything Kiran had said so personally.
She'd said it before, and she'd say it again, but she felt that last year she hadn't been able to have a proper mourning time, shoved from the ruins of her home to the Belleclair's before she could process what happened, back to school where she had to put it all behind her and do school. Regressing back would have reflected poorly on her. So, yes, that was the underlying reason for all her issues in the past year. Birthdays were also always an emotional time, full of confusion, and this one being the anniversary of all those girls' death, well...
"I promise." No, she wasn't, and her tone was sharp again. "I know you wouldn't want to hurt me, Kiran. I know that. I just can't believe-" she didn't know how to continue her sentence, and wanted to curl up and hug Kiran desperately, but felt that wasn't appropriate. Instead, she resolved to sit there, looking straight ahead, not really concentrating on anything, just losing herself in her thoughts.

Kiran stared at Wren, an inward sigh of relief spreading through him. At least she wasn't mad at him anymore. In fact, Kiran felt she looked confused more than anything at this moment. He scooted next to her and put an arm around her, rubbing her back.
"It's okay. And Wren," he continued, stopping to stare into her eyes. "What is it that you can't believe?"

Wren tensed for a moment when he put his arm around her, but soon afterwards melted into his touch again. She looked at up at him, her green eyes meeting his brown ones.
"Nothing," she told him. "I don't know anymore." She adverted her eyes for a second, before she gave up, throwing herself into his arms, clutching at him and beginning to cry. She didn't know why, either. Just, all the emotions welling up inside of her as she held on to him. "I'm sorry," she told him. "I'm so sorry."
