Sirius’s fingers made a soft tapping sound as he drummed them against the wooden tabletop of one of the many tables in the Leaky Cauldron. Every so often, his eyes would sweep the room as casually as he could manage for the time being, but he found that they seemed to always wander back to the same place. The place was the door, the door in which Marlene was supposedly going to enter through at any given time now.
That is, if she was even going to show up at all. He wouldn’t really be that surprised if she just backed out on the last minute. After many letters, pleadings, poetry, rhyming, and cute animal drawings, (Sirius had lost count of how many he’d sent) Marlene had finally given in and sent a reply to him. But before then, it was the silent treatment. For a teenage boy that craves to be the center of attention, whether it’s two people or twenty, that was torture.
And, maybe she had a good reason to be a bit angry. A large crowd was Sirius’s weakness. He always got too darn carried away. He actually did have a pretty good attention span when it came to really important tasks, like watching the map for signs of Filch, but when it came to parties and socializing… good luck. He was all over the place.
But still, Sirius couldn’t help but feel that she had overreacted a bit. For one, he hadn’t bluntly ignored her on purpose. Crys freaking out and fainting, Remus’s demonstration of a fireman’s carry, all the drinks and alcohol.. it was enough to wipe a person clear from someone’s mind! And second, Andy and Remus were good friends of his. If Marlene had wanted to talk with him, he would have welcomed her into their conversation. But, not all people had that special ability to jump into a conversation without warning.
Sirius anxiously looked over towards the door again. Waiting had to be the worst thing in the entire world.

And enter was just what Marlene McKinnon did. She made her way into the Leaky Cauldron dressed to kill, though much more practically than she had been at the party. She wore cute little beret, tilted just so upon her mass of dark hair, a skirt with leggings, and an angora sweater. Even by Muggle standards she had outdone herself.
She swept in like a breath of fresh air, her eyes instantly catching Sirius. She glided over to him, making sure she didn't seem too anxious, though she was missing him as much as he was her. She had to admit that she had overreacted the other night. But she wasn't ever very good at holding her drinks.
And then Brutus had come. Strangely enough, he had got wind of what was going on and arrived before Ariel and her uncle. He hadn't told her how he had found out, and she hadn't cared to ask after the cold-treatment he had given her. Needless to say both Sirius and Marlene had been sufficiently punished.
"Hello, Sirius," she said lazily as she seated herself. Play it cool! She repeated in her mind.

Instantly, Sirius inwardly cringed when Marlene made her presence known inside the dimly lit, shabby bar. Oh bugger, she was here already. She had arrived at the correct time, but Sirius was not quite ready to handle her. He should, however, as he spent the entire afternoon pacing around James’s room, thinking about their meeting down in Diagon Alley. James had to finally hurl a shoe at him to finally get Sirius to settle down. Sirius had never ever done really well around angry girlfriends. He always found them so difficult to manage, which is why many of Sirius's relationships never lasted very long. Break-ups were a breeze; say a few simple words and tada! They’re out of your hair, and there's no obligation to try and please them anymore. Zero. Nada. Zippo. Trying to get on good terms with an angry girlfriend? It was a whole different story. The apologies, the awkwardness, and well, the apologies were just too much to even have to worry about.
Yet, here he was at The Three Broomsticks now, and was going to have to talk to Marlene in approximately 7 seconds. It was too late now to even think about not being prepared to meet with her.
“Hi.” Sirius said sheepishly, absentmindedly picking up a saltshaker from the edge of the table nearest to the wall. “So, uh, I guess you got all my letters then?” he asked, in attempts of trying to fill in some awkward space. Darn it. Even with the lack of replies from her end, letters were so much easier than this right now.

Marlene toyed with a strand of her hair, looking Sirius over quickly. She truly felt horrible about how she had acted, but if she were to come crawling back to him it would fly in the face of every principle, no matter how flawed, she had held up over the past days. In all honesty, she was a bit surprised that he was still her boyfriend. She knew his reputation, but then again, he knew hers.
"Yes, I got every one of them. Your poor owl must have been exhausted."
She studied her nails with a casual sigh. She wanted to fly across that table and show him how sorry she was, but that wouldn't do firstly because of the publickness of the place and secondly because she knew her father had friends who often frequented the place.

Yes, I got every one of them. Your poor owl must have been exhausted.
“Well, uh, that’s good.” Sirius said lamely, for at the moment he seemed to lack the ability to string a bunch of words together that wouldn’t sound really awkward and terrible. To fill in the empty space, he quickly added, “But not good for the owl, I mean, he been a little bit tired out, flying back and forth all that way and stuff…” The last bit of his sentence trailed off as he noticed Marlene direct her attention to her nails.
The nails! NOT GOOD! Little sirens went off in Sirius’s mind, and he got an alarmed look on his face. Mistaking her frustration for an action that said ‘I have better things to do and wish I wasn’t here’ Sirius shot up out of his seat.
“A walk.” He suggested hurriedly, motioning to door that lead outside into Diagon Alley. He repeated, “A walk. With all the snow, it’ll be good.” A change of scenery would be nice, and at least it would distract her from those darn NAILS. Yes, outdoors would be much more exciting, and the better choice.

Marlene could not help but smile as Sirius blathered on about the owl, and then again as he shot to his feet.
Good. Perhaps he was catching on better than she had thought. She willing stood as well, grateful for warm clothing on such a day.
"Sure," she replied casually. "A walk would be nice."
She began making her way to the door, her hand already to her wand to prepare for the brick wall which required tapping. She yawned lazily and winked at Tom the bartender.
Nothing like a little jealousy to spice things up.

“Great!” Sirius said enthusiastically when Marlene got up from her seat, having agreed to going on the walk. The bar was much too stuffy anyway, and it made their meeting seem far less relaxed than he had counted on it being. A nice breath of fresh air was what they really needed right now.
Sirius quickly snatched up his cloak that he had left hanging on the chair beside him, and hastily followed behind Marlene. After casually draping his cloak over his shoulders, he was just in time to see her wink at the bartender Tom. A wink, definitely not a blink. There was certainly some one-eyed action going on there!
Sirius raised an eyebrow in almost-amusement, and decided to play dumb. In a voice that sounded as casual as he possibly could, he said, “D’you have something in your eye?” Sirius placed a hand on the door to the outside, and held it open for her to go through first. He squinted as the bright light of the sun hit his face, and he briefly looked back behind his shoulder at Tom. Terrible Tom. Terrible, Troublesome Tom.

Marlene laughed almost teasingly. Tom really wasn't a threat. In fact, he was a bit repulsive, but she felt like making Sirius scramble for every piece of what he had dropped. It was, one could say, in her nature.
"Don't be so silly, Sirius," she sighed. "Everything's fine."
She placed her hand over his and turned the knob before gliding up to the brick wall and tapping the appropriate bricks, each one in turn, before stepping back to watch it melt away.
"There we are."
She motioned to the glistening world before them.
"Shall we?"

Don't be so silly, Sirius. Everything's fine.
“Oh, of course it is!” Sirius said quickly, dismissing it with a wave of his hand. “Of course.” he repeated, nodding his head confidently, as if he had never ever thought such an outrageous thought. Of course Marlene wasn’t flirting with that terrible Tom. For one, he was more than double her age, and <i>balding.</i> Balding! Sirius was very proud of his hair, thank you very much, and didn’t approve of this nonsense no-hair business!
Sirius smiled to himself when she took his hand in hers. So she had forgiven him enough to at least do that.. not bad! All those letters really must have paid off, and it had taken him days to write all of those. It was nice to see that something good had come out of it.
Andromeda’s words from the other night began to repeat themselves in his mind. ”..constantly praising her.. centre of the attention..calling her the most gorgeous witch alive..”
Why was Andy always right?
Sirius looked Marlene from head to toe as the bricks leading to Diagon Alley melted away, secretly hoping that she would catch him. Here it goes. Sirius cleared his throat and spoke. “So, you’re all nice and dressed up.” he commented with truthfulness. She really had dressed up rather nice this afternoon.

Marlene felt a renewed sense of assurance as he complimented her, both verbally and with his eyes. It was in her nature, as much as she may wish to deny it. She had enough Veela in her to desire to be the one focused on at all times.
So, the ignoring had paid off? What a relief!
"Thanks," she replied, playfully. "So do you."
It helped that she had the hottest boyfriend at Hogwarts. She could hardly think of a sane girl who wouldn't pay for five minutes of his time and here she had him pulling puppy faces to get her happy again.

Sensing a little bit more warmness in her voice than there was before, Sirius smiled to himself. Yes, that was much better. He’d have to thank Andromeda later for her advice, if he hadn’t already. Who knows, he might have already thanked her at the party, but he couldn’t remember due to his tipsyness that night. Twice definitely couldn’t hurt, right? If thank yous were part of the paying attention advice she’d given him, then he would pass in that area soon enough.
Sirius suddenly felt very mischievous and impulsive. (When did he not?) Deadly, deadly combination. Without warning, Sirius ran up behind Marlene, wrapped his arms tightly around her waist, and spun around a couple times, while lifting her a couple feet in the air. He released her, knowing that that probably didn’t feel to wonderful on the ribs and waist. But, he flashed her a brilliant grin anyway.
“Buy you a hot chocolate!” he suggested, motioning his hand towards the nearest coffee shop. It was winter. It was cold out. There was snow. They neeeeded it badly, as badly as a... chocolate frog needs chocolate sauce to swim in. Then again, Sirius reckoned that chocolate frogs really weren’t alive, and didn’t need anything to swim in. Still, that didn’t stop Sirius from keeping a chocolate frog as a pet when he was younger.
You never heard that.
