Wendy gave what she was ashamed to admit had to be classified as a giggle, a mixture between shock at his nerve and embarassed intrigue. Her eyes were bright and laughing when she looked up at him, one eyebrow slightly raised. "Oh we could, now could we?" Now there was a thought...
She was pulled from her warm state of happiness by the sudden shift to a much darker subject matter.
"Wendy, do you think it's wrong for me to be angry at my mother for what she did?" He turned to her, face serious, and Wendy's empathetic streak swung into gear.
"No, not wrong. It's very understandable, really, because of the way she did it." Leaving a note to say you were leaving and going to stay with someone else was not a way to endear one's self to one's husband and children. "If she had gone about it differently, perhaps, talked to you first and explained herself..." It probably wouldn't have made much of a difference, in the long run, but it would have helped the McKinnons, maybe, to understand.
"You're allowed to be angry, at least for a little while. But not for too long, because you can't let it affect your life, your future. You have to, maybe," Wendy paused, looking up into Brutus' beautiful eyes and hoping she wasn't going too much out of line. "Try to forgive her."

He furrowed his brow as she spoke, nodding slightly. He understood what she meant, but he was unsure as to whether or not he would be willing to take that step just yet.
"I don't know how to be," he said with a frown. "My sister hates her, my da says nothing, and Aldous...he's too afraid to believe that she won't be coming back. I know she's still my mother and all, but I can't help but feel this anger inside whenever I think about her, and then I met this Slytherin who blathered on about how that meant I was disloyal to my family and he ancestry...It made no sense, to tell you the truth, but it made me mad."
With a shrug, he continued to walk back towards the castle. He didn't want to talk about it any more. It only frustrated him, and they had been so happy.

Wendy raised her hand that Brutus was holding, turning it slightly so that his hand was on the top. She kissed his knuckles gently, her eyes soft when she looked back up at him.
Who cares what those Slytherins think, Wendy thought irritatedly to herself. Those bloody gits.
She'd never say it out loud, unless pushed to her limit, because it seemed fairly juvenile to complain about her classmates, and to insult them all on principle. But the way they went about as if they were entitled to the world... Wendy just couldn't understand how some of them could be so awful. For someone naturally friendly and with an almost innate need to help people, it was unthinkable that anyone could be as cruel as some of the Slytherins seemed to be.
Sensing it was time for a change of conversation, Wendy searched her mind for somthing to say that wasn't a comment on the weather.
"So, given in to the unstoppable force that is Sirius Black in regards to your sister, have you?" She asked, her voice light. Her reflexive smile slid in to place, and she looked up at him as she waited for his answer.
Please don't be sad, Brutus my love, it breaks my heart when you're upset.

As she kissed his knuckles, it was sign enough to him that she was truly listening to what he had said, and that it mattered to her. He gave a smile and wrapped an arm about her waist and drew her close to him.
"Well, there wasn't really any fighting it," he said with a laugh. "Sirius is better to her than any of her previous boyfriends, so I figure it's best to let it be."
There had been only one time that he had been blatantly cruel to someone, and that person was a young man she had dated two years back who had been remarkably nasty. Brutus had overheard him talking obscenely of his sister in the boys restroom and had walked right up to him and punched him in the face.
The closest he ever got to that was threatening Sirius with his life if he made Marlene unhappy.

"Now there's healthy attitude to have!" Wendy smiled up at him rather impishly, "Settle for the inevitable, find the silver lining, accept that it's just shiny enough to do!"
She laughed, she herself was an enternal optimist who spent much of her time looking for the bright side of things. The cold hard truth was, though, that sometimes the silver lining was miniscule in comparison to the Big and Bad. She did her best, though, and that was hopefully enough.
Sirius Black, though. Far too much of a troublemaking, womanizing, egotistic brat for her tastes. But definately easy on the eyes, if that was more towards your interests in a significant other.
But perhaps... Just because Sirius wasn't her cup of tea, so to speak, maybe that's what Marlene needed to balance herself out. Because really, although Wendy was very fond of the girl, she could be a bit of a drama queen. Maybe someone with that authoritative of a personality needed someone as equally as self-confident?
She shouldn't be so harsh, Wendy reflected. Just because she's gotten the whole package in Brutus - brains, kindness, and looks - not everyone could be so perfect as he was.

Brutus laughed as Wendy spoke, shaking his head. He wasn't sure she'd say that if she knew why he felt so confident about his sister's relationship. He rubbed the back of his neck almost absently.
"I think Marlene has enough fire to keep him in check," he mused. He had been sharing her thoughts without realizing it. "They're both interested enough in themselves to make sure they get what they deserve."
He shook his head, laughing inwardly. Marlene was incredibly self-centered, but she could also be tender and giving. He wouldn't have his sister any other way.
"So," he began, almost hesitantly, "did your family like me?"
He didn't normally care what anyone thought of him, but in this instance he did. He had plans for the end of the year, though he hadn't told Wendy yet.

"Now that's true," Wendy inwardly giggled that they'd been on similar trains of thought. "And as long as they're both happy, and no one's getting hurt, it's probably fine."
Happiness was good. As was love. And even if the Marlene/Sirius romance did not progress into as serious a stage as love, it was still mostly harmless. "Did your family like me?" Brutus asked, sounding genuinely concerned.
"Did they like you? Of course they did!" Wendy enthused, swinging herself out from where they were holding hands so that she was in front of him, walking backwards. "My brothers could scarcely get my father to stop going on about what a 'nice, strong young chap' you seemed to be. He was this close - " She held up her fingers an inch apart "- to just calling you a 'strapping young lad.' He's impressed with how academic-focused you seemed to be, said you were determined and just the right amount of ambitious."
She grinned, remembering fondly the turmoil of opinions that had erupted as soon as Brutus had departed on the bus at the end of their visit.
"And my mum," Wendy shook her head. "She is determined to ask you back soon, if only to recite some Robbie Burns poetry for her. Oh, he's a famous Scottish poet. 'Ode to a Mouse' and 'Ode to a Louse' and such. Much talk of 'wee, timorous beastie' and whatnot, and 'the best laid plans o' mice an' men gang aft a-gley'"
Wendy felt suddenly silly for quoting a poem written in Scottish dialect to someone who actually was Scottish. She blushed, flustered, and realized how much she had been prattling on.
"She was quite taken with your accent. As am I, actually." She laughed softly, slightly embarassed.

Brutus chuckled, shaking his head. He honestly wondered how very far the relationship would go. Was Marlene capable of carrying such a bond? Or would she be like their mother and flee from it? He didn't want to think of that. He recalled the worry he had experienced when telling Wendy he loved her. He liked to think that perhaps his sister was capable of doing the same. He knew that most of her behavior at school was strictly for the male audience she played to. He knew her to often be serious and to have a quicker wit and be more gifted with a wand than anyone else her age.
He blushed slightly as she spoke of her family, a smile creeping to his lips.
"And I tried so hard to disappoint them," he teased. He pursed his lips as she spoke of the poetry before breaking out into complete laughter. "You like my accent? Is that why you're dating me, my Wendy?"
He was teasing, of course. He gave her a playful wink before pulling her close and wrapping his arms around her, placing a long, tender kiss on her lips.

"Did you now?" Wendy raised a slender and fair eyebrow. "Well, I guess you couldn't be perfectly successfull at everything you tried in life." She comforted him matter-of-factly, but instead of the sly bitterness that could have lain behind those words, her voice held only praise and a little bit of pride.
"You like my accent? Is that why you're dating me, my Wendy?" He asked playfully, winking at her and pulling her towards him.
That she came willingly was an understatement. She laid both hands flat on his chest, revelling in the feel of the heartbeat beneath her chilled fingers as he drew her close.
Their teasing and repartee was so comfortable and fun that she loved every minute of it. She felt as if Brutus understood her, would listen to her no matter what she said, and genuinely cared about her. It was almost appallingly too good to be true that she secretly felt she'd found a best friend and a soul mate all at once.
"Of course. It's the only thing I like about you." She replied flippantly and easily, the corners of her lips turning up in mirth as he kissed her, then she relaxed into his arms.

Brutus laughed as she spoke, raising a brow.
"Can't I?" He said, smiling. He was kidding of course, but he did catch the pride in her voice. A faint blush graced his cheeks. He did try very hard to do everything right, but things often seemed to go wrong. But when he looked back, more things went right, he supposed. He had so many things that so many others failed at...most of that he accredited to luck.
He wrapped his arms around her waist, smiling faintly as she told him that his accent was all she liked. He knew, of course, that she was kidding, and the statement was therefore amusing. He felt her relax in his arms and held her closer, pressing his cheek against hers once he had finished kissing her.

Wendy felt her heart warm as a blush graced Brutus' cheeks, the combination with his pleased and faintly embarassed smile and crinkled eyes absolutely adorable. Yupp, he was definately a keeper.
She loved that he had a humble streak. He was one of those young men who had enough going for them that they could be egotistical and vain to their heart's content, and still be accepted in society and wanted by the ladies becuase of their looks, wealth, power or so on. Brutus could have been one of those selfish, self-assured young men; he certainly had enough in his favour so as to do so. Actually, had he done so, he could have been one of the Kings of Slytherin, with all the easy prestige and even easier girls that came along with it.
But he wasn't. He was Brutus McKinnon, who flushed when complemented, who took his prefect duties seriously, who offered a helping hand when needed, who took ill girls to the Hospital Wing without a complaint, and who didn't consider himself above the masses just because of who he was.
"I love you," His breath ghosted about her ear from where he whispered the words with his cheek gently against hers, sending a soft shiver down her spine.
"I love you too, Mr. McKinnon." She answered truthfully, her voice soft and her eyes closed.
She knew she did, she didn't need any time to think about her answer. It wasn't the first time they had said those powerful words to each other, but those three words still remained meaningful each time they said it. It seemed a little strange to her that she was only sixteen, but she already knew that she had found The One.

He continued to hold her close, not questioning her words. He had no doubt of her, putting complete faith in her. He could tell her his darkest fears and greatest doubts without worry of being mocked. She was his Wendy, his best friend, and the love of his life.
He thought with excitement of his plans for the end of the year, wondering how she would take it. When he asked her to wait, would she? Would she be willing to remain true to him? He didn't want to cage her, but he loved her so deeply that it seemed almost indecent to even think of leaving school without asking her to.
Brutus ran a finger along her jaw, tilting her face upwards and gently kissed her lips.

Wendy tried not to visibly shiver as he ran a finger along her jaw, the touch tickling just enough to send tingles down her spine. Had it been anyone else, she might've flinched away almost reflexively, but with Brutus.... It seemed ridiculous that even her subconcious trusted him enough for her not be afraid he would hurt her.
Kind of fairy tale like, really, she thought dreamly as he tilted her face up and he kissed her again. She could just imagine Brutus, looking quite smashing upon a white horse (shining armour optional, of course, if he preferred to be shirtless who was she to argue?) sweeping her up into her arms and them riding away into the sunset.
Hey, it could happen. She could do magic for heaven's sake! At this moment if Brutus was secretly a prince she wouldn't be the least surprised...
"More than textbooks?" Brutus asked, his voice deep, his face only a few inches away from hers. He winked, and her heart melting just a little bit more.
The corners of her eyes wrinkled in silent laughter as she looked up at him. "I won't tell them if you don't." Her voice sounded a little dreamy even to her ears, and if she hadn't felt quite so darn lovely-dovey she might've been a bit embarassed. But heck, Brutus knew she was crazy about him. So she was still managing to act like a twelve year old girl with a crush after almost a year of dating....That couldn't be a bad thing, could it?

There had been so many things which would have ripped many couple apart. There had been confusion, anger, hurt, and so many things, but they had managed to come through. It was hard to believe that she had forgiven him for the incident in the forest last year.
The affection with which she spoke filled him with unspeakable happiness.
"I won't," he teased. He kissed her again, shivering slightly against her.
