 Early Practice (Brutus)
« Thread Started on Jan 31, 2008, 11:19pm »

Even with snow on the ground, a frosty wind, and icicles hanging from the rings of the goals, it didn't seem to stop the most dedicated to playing Quidditch. Practicing is such scarce breathing weather helped develope the lungs...or at least, thats what Regulus Black wanted to believe. That way his friends and family wouldn't yell at him for practicing in such weather! Though they didn't refrain from calling him crazy. And sometimes he wondered if they were right.

But he didn't seem to care at the moment. He was clothed in three heavey cloaks, two pairs of pants, lots of socks, and a Slytherin hat and scarf. And he was steaming in this outfit. He knew he would be taking some of it off shortly. Holding his new broom (because his old one was frowned upon, since it had belonged to Sirius), Regulus was excited to finally test it out. In his other hand also help a small box that contained his pride and joy of the game: the Golden Snitch. Being the Seeker for the Slytherin team was very honoring and also oddly ironic. Jeanie Trotter was the Hufflepuff Seeker--the girl that he fancied very much so. And the Gryffindor Seeker was a rival for Regulus--which was the only reason why he disliked the boy. They were Seeking rivals, that was all. Brutus McKinnon being part of a bloodtraitor family didn't effect Regulus. His own brother was said to be a bloodtraitor, yet he still was close with him.

Streching slightly and warming his hands (which only had a single pair of very light gloves on them) Regulus opened up the little box and took out the Snitch. It gleamed in the light, and soon started fluttering its little wings and took flight. Regulus watched it for a few seconds with his bright blue/gray eyes and then it went into the sun and he lost sight of it. Setting down the box and deciding to take off a cloak, Regulus threw the cloak ontop of the box and mounted his broom. He let himself get a feel for it, and then took off--this being the newest and fastest broom, Regulus was enjoying the cold wind at his face and speed of the broom. He felt like nothing could ruin his time right now.

After his flying warm up, Regulus stayed afloat in the middle of the arena--his eyes seeking out his beloved Snitch.

Brutus had intended to get some practice in alone. He liked to have the Pitch to himself so he could work on flaws in his techniques. Garbed in the dark, unmarked Quidditch robes his da had bought for him, he strolled onto the Pitch with his broom under his arm. He wore, as usual, his Gryffindor scarf and a hat which kept his ears warm. His stunning eyes scanned the Pitch before looking up into the sky, he caught sight of an individual and heaved a sigh.

Suddenly, right before his face, was a small, fluttering ball. He lifted his hand and grabbed it, watching it struggle in his hand before the golden wings fell limp.

"Oi! Black!" He called out. "Looking for this?"

He raised the ball above his head, a smile on his lips. His eyes showed clearly his amusement. He doubted Black would let him have his time on the Pitch, and as such, he figured he might as well make a point. They were rivals, and much like Regulus, it wasn't because of the other Seeker's family or house, but rather because of the threat Black posed on the Pitch.

Regulus heard his name and quickly looked down to see Brutus McKinnon holding a gleaming gold ball. Regulus smirked. He hadn't even looked for the snitch for a mintue before it was found by none other than his rival. Looking around to make sure no one else from teh Gryffindor or Slytherin teams were there, Regulus clutched his broom handle and zoomed down towards the ground. He slowed down and dismounted right infront of Brutus, scratching his head and smirking.

"Bloody hell McKinnon--can you at least mount your broom first before showing me up?" Regulus laughed and took off his second cloak, letting the sun warm his black one that he had left on. "Coming out to practice as well?" Regulus added throwing the cloak ontop of the other one.

((sorry!!! might take me a while to post, my internet isn't working and I really don't know whats wrong with it....supposedly its fixed, but i beg to differ!!))

((it's ok :D))

Brutus managed an actual smile as Regulus spoke. He gave a shrug at his question, laughing slightly. Rivals, yes, but like Sirius, Regulus was a great deal more pleasant than many other Blacks McKinnon knew. At least he wasn't trying to incapacitate him or curse him, or break his wand, or kill him...The list went on forever, really.

"Well, I had intended on it, but I can come back again later if you want me to."

He needed to practice. It wasn't as though he had oodles of free time, either, but he wouldn't expect Regulus to share his practice time with him.

Regulus shook his head. He was in a great mood--Quidditch always seemed to do that to the boy. He mounted his broom and let it hover about the ground, streching as he did so.

"What's better practice than to actually have someone to rival against? Beats the bloody hell out of looking for the Snitch by yourself. At times it can be rather boring, if your not in the right mood, that is." Regulus smirked. He would love to have the little competition against Brutus. What better way to practice? It kept things interesting and helped keep one's attention on the game and the task at hand. It was rather exciting to play against someone who knew how to seek. Regulus would play with his cousins, but they would grow bored after a while and tell him he needed something else to do besides the game.

"Unless your just scared McKinnon. I would understand, you know. And I promise I wouldn't spread it around the school...."Regulus raised his eyebrows at the older boy. Being three years older than Regulus had barely any effect on the young Slytherin. He was used to being around the older crowd--it was the younger that sometimes frightened him. The only advantage that Brutus had was that he was stronger than Regulus, but you didn't need that to be a seeker. You needed superb eyesight--and Regulus definitely had that.

Brutus gave a faint laugh. As he spoke, his soft, Scottish accent was just barely audible, though it was more pronounced in his light mood.

"Well, I suppose there's some truth to that, though I suppose you'll be wanting to steal that McKinnon leap I pulled at the last match. Practiced that one for weeks."

He was joking, of course. He had pulled a completely stupid move and jumped from his broom, lucky enough to be caught before he hit the ground. But then again, it had won them the game.

"Scared, Black?" He said, shaking his head. "I'm afraid I don't know what you're talking about!"

His father was, after all, a former Quiddith legend. He had been flying since he was able to walk. It was one of the things in his life he never felt afraid doing. He mounted his broom and kicked off.

"All right then. Let's do this!"

Regulus shook his head and smirked again. Mckinnon leap? Bloody hell it looked like a suicide! It was by sheer luck that McKinnon had caught that and was able to land on the ground with only minor injuries. It wasn't something Regulus wanted to try--and never thought the need to practice it!

"Heh--after that little 'leap' as you call it, you should be glad you didn't get a one way ticket to the grave! Sheer luck that you caught that too..."Regulus laughed. He was excited to get to play now--not that he wasn't before, but would be fun to actually have a need to seek--he would simply have to show Brutus that he was younger, yet better at the game. But one of those things that rivals do.

"Its ok McKinnon, if your scared, you can tell me....I mean, I guess I could keep it to myself so you could keep your image...."Regulus winked and leaned back on his broom. He was all set to start soring off again, and he couldn't wait. It was cold, but it was still a beautiful day.

"Yes, let's! All you have to do is release the Snitch..."Regulus reminded him, for he was still holding it in his hand, its little wings limp at its sides, just wishing to be thrown into the air once more and set into motion. It was funny how the little ball seemed to have a mind of its own. It was sad when it was locked up and now fluttering around being chased. It played games with the Seekers, whom it always seemed to know who they were. It was such a wonderful little ball--and it was definitely Regulus's favorite of the three different types.

"Luck?" Brutus laughed. He was a damn good Seeker, even if it wasn't his preferred place to play. He shook his head, smiling. "Don't be jealous, Black. I'm sure you would have done the same."

The Snitch had been right there. What else was he supposed to do?

"Scared isn't a word in the McKinnon dictionary!" He informed. Without another word, he hurled the Snitch into the sky. His face split into a smile as he looked to Black.

"Ready?"

Regulus watched the Snitch hover for a second, then take off in a flash of brilliant gold. Regulus smiled and nodded.

"I was born ready McKinnon!" Regulus said taking flight, heading straight up towards the middle of the field, his eyes scanning the cold sky for the little ball he loved so much.

((it's ok...I understand entirely...and thanks :)))

Brutus remained where he was as Regulus shot into the sky. Hovering in this location, he had a fairly good view of the entire pitch, though it would take a bit for him to move to some of the locations.

His keen eyes darted back and forth. He drifted slightly to the left, arms hanging at his sides. When the time came, he could steer the broom with his knees if he had to, but he did not want to allow himself to grow too tense.

Leveling out and taking his broom to a hover, Regulus ran a hand through his raven hued hair and then raised his arms to strech in the cold air. The wind was slightly more intense at the heights he was at, but he was secured to his broom. Regulus looked around for the glint of gold, and then back down to McKinnon, who was where they had been moments before still. He noticed this about the older player--he liked to stay low and survey the field from that way, instead of in the middle of the pitch or higher above like most Seekers perfered. True enough, Regulus liked to be a more mid-pitch, possibly a little lower depending on the weather and the gleam of the sun at the time of play.

Today, however, Regulus was higher up--practicing in multiple positions on the field was key to Regulus's personal practice style. He wanted to be keen in every position, for he liked doing the opposite of his opponent during their matches.

"So, McKinnon...isn't my brother dating that sister of yours?" Regulus asked. He had seen the two together numerous times, and snogging usually during all of them...though whether they were actually together or not, Regulus didn't know. Sirius was known for the girl's he'd fancied, which was pretty much every Gryffindor in his year, some that were younger or older. It was interesting to know things about his brother that he normally didn't get a chance to discuss with him. Their meetings were usually time limited, so Regulus couldn't exactly talk indepth about everything that's happening in his life or ask what was going on in his brothers.

Brutus preferred to scan the lower areas first. Most Seekers seemed to forget that the Snitch often hovered in lower places like this. If he didn't find it, he would move to a different area. He had shown in his first match that he was definitely good at what he did, though his size often made it hard to believe. He was fairly burly for a Seeker, after all. Still, it made him faster when going into downward spirals. He glanced up momentarily at Regulus before veering sharply to the left at a glint of gold.

He missed, and cursed softly under his breath. He angled his broom and began ascending, going higher than Regulus now. But as he began to pass him, he heard the question and arched a brow. It was an odd question for Regulus to ask, especially considering his "reputation".

"Yes," he replied. "They've been dating since the beginning of this year."

He remembered how he had soundly threatened Sirius pending anything happening to his sister. Brutus was very, very protective, after all. If Sirius hurt Marlene, Brutus had quite simply assured him that he would break his legs with his bare hands. He had come close to it during the Christmas holidays, but had been more upset with his sister than Sirius. After all, what older brother liked to be informed in the middle of the night that his sister was having a drunken spat with her boyfriend in a Muggle's house, ad then (when he showed up) wearing an outfit that brought to mind a slutty Slytherin's swimming suit.

He had made Marlene sort that out herself.

"Why do you ask?" He prompted.

Regulus shrugged, still focusing his main thoughs on finding his beloved Snitch.

"Just...er....wondering I suppose....Just seen them together a lot...Haven't talked to Sirius much this year, don't really know whats going on in his life other than the same gossip that you and everyone else hears everyday..."Regulus heaved a sigh, not really paying attention to who he was talking to, but merely just talking things out and trying to get his thoughts together. He wondered why he and Sirius hadn't talked as much this year. They used to meet up all the time the past few years, but this year just seemed different. Sirius didn't have time for his little brother anymore it seemed. Regulus couldn't blame him, but the last time he saw him was at Jeanie's party and they hadn't really gotten to talk much there either. It was more of the awkward stares that Regulus recieved as he walked through the threshold of Jeanie's door into a room filled with Gryffindors, Hufflepuffs, and Ravenclaws--all of which knew of Regulus Black. Some feared him, others loathed him, and the rest we're wondering if he was someone in a costume playing a prank on poor Jeanie. He was surprised nothing had gotten back to his housemates yet. Of course he would deny anything and everything, but sometimes he wished he would get caught and then he could live as a blood traitor and be happy about it. He'd be openly with Jeanie and things would be promising for once in his life.

But Regulus wasn't that lucky. He was lucky enough to have Jeanie's close friends befriend him slightly. He was glad for especially for Wren's friendship, since he hoped to help her out with Ian's rudeness. Regulus would never want to live with the boy, so he couldn't imagine Wren doing just that. She's had it tough, and Regulus wanted her to know he was there for her just because he's been going through a lot as well. Such things he wished to talk with someone about, and here he was--hovering around the Pitch with his arch rival and just about to tell him everything in his life.

Just then, Regulus caught eye of the Snitch and rushed towards the far end of the pitchs goals. It was great having such execellent eyesight--very handy when playing the position of Seeker.
